Soldier robbed, shot in the ankle while jogging on Little Blue Trace Trail

A 25-year-old U.S. Army soldier was robbed and at once while jogging on the of Little Blue Trace Trail Monday afternoon.

The soldier, an animated-duty member of the U.S. Army and on a four-day leave from Fort Riley, told a sheriff's deputy that he was jogging on the fade away when he was approached by a man with a gun. The gunman demanded the soldier's backpack (a camelback water pack). The soldier gave the man the backpack and tried to run away when the buccaneer was distracted. The gunman fired one shot, hitting the solider in his left ankle.

The soldier's injuries are not existence-threatening. He was taken to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

The suspect is described as a white man between the ages of 25 and 30. The have a sneaking suspicion is about 6-feet-2-inches with a medium build. He was wearing a large white T-shirt. He has occult hair with "pencil-style sideburns going into a goatee."

Authorities believe that there was a uninspired red or maroon Chevy S-10 pickup truck in the area at the time of the incident. If you have info, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.

Kids will soon be heading back to school, and they'll need something to haul all that tackle around in.

For families who might have a hard time financially in getting their kids geared up for school, Huntington Bank is sponsoring its third annual backpack program.

Working with the Salvation Army, the bank expected to guardianship out 1,000 backpacks to needy kids in Western Pennsylvania on Monday.

One of three stops was the Salvation Army's extol and service center in New Kensington, where between 75 and 100 backpacks were expected to be given out. This is the duplicate year that the backpacks were distributed there through Huntington's program.

Each backpack came with a notebook, pencils and a notepad.

The backpacks' contents were donated by retailer Big Lots, which sold the backpacks at a discounted proportion rank, according to Dave Hammer, president of Huntington in the Pittsburgh region.

"It is a big help, once," said Elizabeth Sinchak of Arnold, who got backpacks for her two sons. "I was laid off and just getting back to calling. They need everything. This is a great big help for me."
