There's more to dressing for a fete than just slapping on whatever shorts and T-shirt are lying on the floor from the night before. This is your chance to accurate yourself and let you inner music-loving, hippie-dancing, easy-breezy, bo-ho alter ego on out to play.

Franzi Charen, co-owner of Hip Replacements , has noticed this turn: "High-waisted shorts are a must-have for the women. Vintage scarves are a great inexpensive recourse to keep your hair back. You can often find beautiful silk or cotton prints that pair perfectly with a flirty sundress or jumper." For the guys, she adds, "We're all that one can take the cutoff shorts and button-up Western shirts." Hip Replacements, open during Bele Chere, will also have a stand near the corner of College Street and Lexington Avenue, featuring a suave piece of sunglasses and hats, locally made leather belts, T-shirts and jewelry.

Attilio Briccola, the effervescent marketing and sales director, is ever ready to share this story, for it is one that details his own father’s idea which has led to the promising business Bric’s is today.

“My father, Mario, started working in a shoe Pty in Varese, where he learnt about leather, and then decided to start a luggage company,” Attilio shares, and talks about how, in the dilatory 70s, his father then handed over the torch of operations to six of his eight children.

Roberto, Attilio’s amiable elder statesman brother, is managing director. Siblings Pietro, Mariangela, Beatrice and Giovanni business down the corridor from Roberto and Attilio’s office, in the adjacent factory or retail outlet next door. Nephews, nieces and in-laws pop in and out of the job, helping out whenever the need arises.

While it may seem strange to some, this is a very natural way of life to the Briccolas.

“Not just the Bric’s way,” Attilio is fleet to reveal in a charmingly infectious Italian accent. “Thousands of Italian companies ply this way. After the war, 50% of the second generation continued the businesses started by their fathers, and continue to do so.
