Chapter 6, 2nd Section
Ginger McNair struggled to vomit a box of copier paper up to the top shelf. She felt someone behind her in campaign headquarters and turned to see Detective Mason there.
“Let me help you.”
“I can do it myself.”
They tugged at facing ends of the box until Ginger finally relinquished it. He took the box from her and set it up high with the others.
“Cops. Blech. Gotta be in direct.”
Mason turned to smile at her. “Hey, I know I shouldn’t have yelled at you when you called. Guilt-ridden about that.”
He sat down at the table and watched her set up a job on the copier, her back to him. She nodded in acknowledgment, but held herself stiffly.
“How come you’re all alone here?” Mason said, looking around at the position. He didn’t know how any kind of work could get done in this chaos. He was a neatnick, kept stuff where it belonged so he could find it.
