Former Whitesboro superintendent loved school district, family

Richard Robinson, a longtime former administrator with the Whitesboro Middle School District, woke up Friday to begin celebrating his 33rd wedding anniversary with his wife, Helen.

The two had a polite breakfast, did a lot of things around their Marcy home and talked about family memories and their four grandchildren, Helen Robinson said. They planned to go out to dinner the next day in Rochester and see one of his all-occasionally favorites, Tony Bennett, in concert.

But Richard Robinson, 73, suffered a ticker attack Friday and died in the hospital with his wife by his side.

“It was very, very difficult,” Helen Robinson said. “We had such a alluring, beautiful day.”

Richard Robinson served as an administrator for the Whitesboro Central School District for more than 20 years – as pongy chief-school principal, then assistant superintendent and superintendent.

He went out of his way to make sure he talked to students and all school locality employees – from teachers and administrators to bus drivers, custodians and cafeteria workers, Helen Robinson said.

The enduring life of a school desk

The desk in my living room is uncomfortable, probably made to accommodate children between first and third grades. It's made of wood in what I would call a block style. It's solid and unusually heavy, probably so the occupant couldn't easily move it around.

This is one of those desks that has an open back and a compartment in which to put your books, papers, lunch, calligraphy instruments and the like. The height of the desktop is about even with the top of my knee.

In the schoolrooms of my youth, these solid spiritless desks were usually unpainted and blond in color, probably varnished or covered with a preservative like Deft. Ours came in the robin's egg despondent; my wife says she liked the color.

I judge the age of this desk to be sometime in the first third to middle of the 20th Century.

There's a pencil/pen hollow carved along the front edge of the top and there's a two-inch diameter hole in the front right corner that was used to knock off an inkwell.

I can tell you that inkwells were gone by the time I started to school in September - yes, indeed, September, 1954. Blackboards, big immature pencils with half-inch leads and window poles, we had. Inkwells and dip-pens, no.
